The TV's are fine and were just using AVI right now. A surge is maybe a lightning strike to wires far down the street. It should come with a tiny remote too. The chances your problem isn't hardware-related at this point I think are nil. Some devices will send voltage through the HDMI connection and i've literally seen them arc at night as i'm just about to stick it the port.
